Haleakalā Sunrise: The Exact Permit Booking Timeline

Reservations open at 7 AM HST exactly 60 days ahead and sell out in minutes. Here's the playbook that actually works.

Watching sunrise from the 10,023-foot Haleakalā summit is on most first-time-Maui itineraries, and it has been reservation-controlled since 2017. There are no walk-ups between 3 AM and 7 AM — period.

The booking system

  • Where: recreation.gov, search “Haleakalā Sunrise.”
  • When: Reservations open exactly 60 days ahead at 7:00 AM HST and frequently sell out within 10 minutes for prime dates.
  • Backup: A second batch is released 48 hours before each date at 7:00 AM HST — your second-best shot.
  • Cost: $1 reservation fee + $30 park entry per vehicle (or America the Beautiful Pass).
  • Limit: One reservation per customer every 3 days. Per vehicle, not per person.

On the day

  • Leave the resort areas by 3:00 AM to be at the summit by 5 AM.
  • Temperature at the top: 30–45°F. Bring real layers — most rentals don’t include warm clothes.
  • The visitor center has restrooms but no food. Stop at the Pukalani gas station on the way up.
