West Maui & Lahaina

  • Lahaina Front Street

    Closed to general visitors

    Active rebuild zone. Reopening to general visitors realistically one to three years out. Respect the closure — this is not a sightseeing destination.

  • Lahaina Small Boat Harbor

    Open

    Reopened December 2025 for limited commercial ocean operations. Snorkel tours, fishing charters, and sunset sails are operating again.

  • Honoapiʻilani Highway

    Open with detours

    Through traffic restored to Kapalua and points north. Expect rebuild-related detours and active construction equipment.

  • Kāʻanapali & Kapalua resorts

    Open

    North of the burn zone — never affected directly. Hotels and beach access fully operational.

Permits & Reservations

  • Haleakalā Sunrise

    Reservation required

    Daily release on recreation.gov, 7 AM HST, exactly 60 days in advance. Prime dates sell out within minutes; a 48-hour-before drop is your backup.

  • Waiʻānapanapa State Park

    Reservation required (non-residents)

    Book at gostateparks.hawaii.gov up to 30 days ahead. Morning slots disappear first.

  • Pīpīwai / Kīpahulu (Haleakalā NP)

    Open, no reservation

    $30/vehicle 3-day NP pass at the gate or America the Beautiful. Trail typically opens at 8 AM.

  • ʻĪao Valley State Monument

    Open, no reservation

    Day-of entry; $5 per person + $10 per vehicle for non-residents.

Road to Hāna

  • Hāna Highway (HI-360)

    Open

    64 miles, ~620 curves, 59 one-lane bridges. Allow 10–12 hours round-trip. Cell service drops past Pāʻia.

  • Back side of Haleakalā (Pi'ilani Hwy → Kaupō)

    Open, conditional

    Most rental car agreements still prohibit this stretch. Single-lane gravel sections after Kīpahulu. Don't commit without checking with the rental company.

Conditions

  • Surf (north & west shores)

    Highly variable, Oct–Mar

    Check NOAA before any north-shore activity in winter. Visitor rescues happen weekly. If locals aren't in the water, you shouldn't be either.

  • Trade winds

    Typical for season

    Generally 10–25 mph in the afternoons; mornings calmer. Plan ocean activities for AM.

  • Vog (volcanic haze)

    Minimal

    Kīlauea on Hawai'i Island is the source; Maui rarely sees significant vog except during Kona-wind events.
